At present, a continuous decline in the number of students in higher education institutions is being observed. This trend is evident not only in urban areas but also in rural and semi-urban regions. The present research paper analyzes the reasons for the declining number of students in various colleges under Berasia Tehsil of Bhopal district. Student attendance in colleges is crucial for their academic success and the efficiency of the institution. Despite taking admission, many students do not attend classes regularly. In this study, the reasons for irregular student attendance in colleges were analyzed through a Google Form survey conducted with 100 students. The findings indicate that academic interest, quality of teaching, and social and personal factors are significant contributors.
Introduction
Regular attendance plays a vital role in students’ academic success, yet many colleges in Bairsia Tehsil face the problem of students enrolling but not attending classes consistently. Irregular attendance negatively affects learning outcomes, institutional efficiency, and students’ future career opportunities. This study aims to identify the causes of poor attendance and suggest practical solutions.
The literature review highlights multiple factors influencing absenteeism, including lack of interest, weak peer engagement, personal and family issues, health problems, transportation difficulties, and part-time work. Previous studies and NEP 2020 emphasize the importance of student engagement, reminders, and awareness programs to improve attendance.
The research was conducted across colleges in Bairsia Tehsil, Bhopal district, using a survey of 100 students through a structured questionnaire administered via Google Forms and QR codes. The findings show that while 40% of students maintain attendance above 75%, a significant proportion fall below this level. Major reasons for irregular attendance include personal and social factors, low academic interest, teaching quality, and transport or health issues.
Based on the findings, the study recommends career counseling before admission, improved transport facilities, strengthened career and placement support, better teaching quality through innovative methods, enhanced student engagement via interactive and extracurricular activities, and digital outreach programs to increase enrolment and regular attendance.
Conclusion
There are many interconnected reasons behind the declining number of students in colleges in Bairasia tehsil and nearby areas – such as lack of interest in the course, problem of transportation facilities, quality of teaching, and lack of career guidance. By implementing structured counselling, innovative teaching, and better connectivity, institutions can improve regularity and overall student engagement.
