A Randomised Open Labelled Comparative Clinical Study to Evaluate the Varnya Effect of Manjistha Mukha Lepa and Manjistha Kwath Mukh Prakshalan as an Upkrama of Dincharya
This study evaluates the effectiveness of Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) in improving skin complexion (Varnya) through two Ayurvedic skincare procedures: Manjistha Lepa (herbal face pack) and Manjistha Mukha Prakshalan (face washing with Manjistha decoction). Ayurveda emphasizes healthy skin as an important aspect of beauty and well-being, and recommends daily practices such as Mukhlepa and Mukha Prakshalan for maintaining skin health. Manjistha is widely recognized for its blood-purifying, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and complexion-enhancing properties. It helps reduce hyperpigmentation, dark spots, wrinkles, acne, eczema, and other skin disorders while promoting an even skin tone.
The primary aim of the study is to compare the clinical efficacy of Manjistha Lepa and Manjistha Mukha Prakshalan in improving complexion. A two-arm open clinical trial will be conducted on 60 participants aged 18–30 years, divided into two groups of 30 each. Group I will apply Manjistha Lepa on alternate days for 30 days, while Group II will perform daily face washing with Manjistha decoction. The total study duration is 42 days, including a 15-day follow-up period.
Patient evaluation will be based on objective measures such as the Fitzpatrick Skin Scale for complexion assessment and a skin analyzer to measure moisture and oil levels. Observations will be recorded at regular intervals throughout the study. Results will be categorized as good, fair, poor, or no response based on the percentage improvement in complexion. Statistical analysis will be performed using appropriate t-tests to compare the effectiveness of both treatments.
Conclusion
Overall, the research aims to scientifically validate the skin-enhancing effects of Manjistha and determine whether topical application (Lepa) or facial cleansing (Mukha Prakshalan) provides better improvement in complexion and skin health.
