In the modern digital era, the use of the internet, smartphones, online banking, social media, and digital payment systems has increased significantly among youth. While digital technology provides many benefits and convenience, it has also increased the risk of cyber fraud. Cyber fraud includes illegal online activities such as phishing, online scams, identity theft, hacking, and digital payment fraud. These activities can lead to financial loss, misuse of personal information, and security threats.
The present study focuses on cyber fraud awareness among youth. The main objectives of the study are to understand awareness regarding cyber fraud, identify common types of cyber fraud, study the factors affecting cyber fraud awareness, and examine precautionary measures to reduce cyber fraud threats. The study is based on secondary data collected from research papers, journals, books, reports, and online sources related to cybercrime and cyber fraud.
The findings of the study indicate that cyber fraud is increasing rapidly in the digital environment and youth are among the most affected users due to their frequent use of online platforms. The study also highlights that factors such as digital literacy, internet usage, and knowledge of cyber safety practices influence cyber fraud awareness. Safe online behavior, strong passwords, awareness of suspicious links, and proper cyber security practices can help reduce cyber fraud risks.
The study concludes that improving cyber fraud awareness and promoting digital safety education are important steps for protecting youth from cyber threats and creating a safer digital environment.
Introduction
This study examines cyber fraud awareness among youth in India, highlighting how the rapid growth of internet usage and digital services has increased exposure to cyber threats. While digital technologies have improved communication, education, banking, shopping, and online payments, they have also led to a rise in cyber fraud, including phishing, identity theft, hacking, online scams, financial fraud, UPI frauds, OTP frauds, and AI-based deepfake scams. Since young people are among the most active internet users, they are particularly vulnerable to such threats, making cyber awareness and safety practices essential.
The literature review reveals that cybercrime awareness varies according to factors such as locality, education level, gender, digital literacy, and internet usage. Previous studies found that urban students generally possess greater awareness than rural students, while many users have only moderate knowledge of cybersecurity. Researchers consistently emphasize the importance of preventive measures such as using strong passwords, avoiding suspicious links, understanding cyber laws, and participating in awareness programs. Recent studies also highlight the increasing risks associated with AI-generated scams, phishing attacks, and digital payment frauds.
The study identifies a research gap in understanding cyber fraud awareness and safety measures within the current digital environment, particularly among youth. To address this gap, the research aims to explore the concepts and types of cybercrime and cyber fraud, assess awareness levels, analyze their causes and effects, and examine preventive measures against cyber threats.
Using a descriptive research design based on secondary data from journals, articles, reports, and government publications, the study investigates cyber fraud awareness, common cyber threats, and safety practices. The hypothesis proposes that there is a significant relationship between cyber fraud awareness and the adoption of precautionary measures among youth.
The findings indicate that cyber fraud is a growing concern in the digital era. Phishing attacks account for the largest share of cyber fraud incidents, followed by OTP frauds, UPI frauds, identity theft, and AI/deepfake scams. Awareness levels differ among individuals depending on their digital literacy and cybersecurity knowledge. The study concludes that enhancing cyber awareness through education, safe browsing habits, strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and caution against suspicious links can significantly reduce cyber fraud risks and improve online safety among youth.
Conclusion
Cyber fraud is increasing rapidly in today’s digital world. Youth are using the internet and online platforms more frequently, which increases the risk of cyber fraud. This study explains cyber fraud awareness, common types of cyber fraud, factors affecting awareness, and safety measures. It is important to improve awareness and follow safe online practices to reduce cyber fraud threats.
