The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is considered a game-changer for digital marketing practices. This paper attempts to assess the customer perception towards the AI-based digital marketing practices by studying factors like personalization, trust, data privacy, engagement and purchase intentions of customers. Technologies such as chatbots, recommendation engines, predictive analytics and auto-advertising among others have enhanced interactions between business organizations and customers. Nonetheless, fears about data protection and ethical usage of data have remained to shape customer perception about the marketing approaches of using AI technology. In this regard, this paper endeavors to study the perceptions of customers about the marketing initiatives based on AI and the factors which affect their perception. 100 respondents in Kannur District of Kerala were taken as the sample size by using convenient sampling technique. It is concluded that although customers greatly value the convenience, personalization and speed of the digital marketing through AI, their overall perception will depend on data privacy and the value of personalized experience to them.
Introduction
This study examines customer perceptions of AI-driven digital marketing in Kannur District, Kerala. AI-driven digital marketing uses technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), predictive analytics, and automation to analyze customer behavior, personalize marketing campaigns, automate customer interactions, and improve marketing efficiency. Common AI applications include personalized recommendations, chatbots, email personalization, social media analytics, sentiment analysis, voice search optimization, and programmatic advertising. These technologies help businesses enhance customer satisfaction, improve decision-making, and increase return on investment (ROI).
The study was motivated by the rapid adoption of AI in digital marketing and the need to understand customer attitudes toward AI-powered marketing in Kerala, a state with high internet penetration and digital adoption. While AI offers personalized experiences and convenience, concerns about privacy, data security, transparency, and algorithmic bias influence customer trust and acceptance.
The research aimed to assess customer perceptions of AI-enabled digital marketing among 100 respondents in Kannur District using a questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and Kruskal–Wallis H test to examine differences across demographic groups.
Key Findings
Gender: Male respondents showed significantly more positive perceptions of AI-based digital marketing than female respondents (p = 0.017).
Age: Customer perceptions differed significantly by age (p = 0.031), with respondents aged 36–45 years showing the most positive perceptions.
Marital Status: Married respondents had significantly more favorable perceptions than unmarried respondents (p = 0.014).
Educational Qualification: No significant relationship was found between education level and perception (p = 0.286).
Occupation: Occupation significantly influenced perceptions (p = 0.040), with private employees reporting the most positive attitudes and business owners the least.
Monthly Income: Higher-income respondents, particularly those earning above ?50,000 per month, had significantly more favorable perceptions of AI-enabled digital marketing (p = 0.030).
Conclusion
The study highlights the fact that AI-based digital marketing has become a vital tool in improving the customer experience and competitive edge in Kerala. Organizations which adopt AI-based technologies with transparency, ethics, and customer-centricity can be successful in ensuring greater customer satisfaction and trust, as well as competitive advantage. The study offers great lessons to marketers, business organizations, tech innovators, and policy makers in adopting AI-based marketing strategies that can fulfill both the technological needs and customer requirements. It is concluded that although customers greatly value the convenience, personalization and speed of the digital marketing through AI, their overall perception will depend on data privacy and the value of personalized experience to them.
