Web application is the pivotal component of web development. With the growth of web applications, frontend architectures have shifted from monolithic model to micro-frontend. While micro-frontends offer independent deployment, flexibility, adaptability, extensibility, they introduce major challenges in Search Engine Optimization. Micro-frontends work on client side rendering, it uses java script frameworks and decentralized evolved teams which can negatively impact indexing, SERP ranking and page performance. In this review paper analyze the existing micro-frontend approaches and reviews best technique for improving SEO in micro frontend systems. In this study we focus on techniques such as Single- SPA integration, Server Side Rendering, Web components, I- Frames, Shared event bus, Varnish Cache and Black box react components. Existing research on micro-frontends focus on the comparatively analysis and practical implications in web development.
Introduction
Web development has evolved from static pages to dynamic, modular applications. Modern architectures, supported by single-page applications (SPAs) and microservices on the backend, encourage independent development and deployment. For frontends, micro-frontends provide a scalable solution by breaking large monolithic frontends into smaller, independently deployable modules.
A key challenge in adopting micro-frontends is balancing modularity and performance, while ensuring SEO remains effective. Monolithic architectures previously allowed centralized control over HTML, routing, metadata, and SEO implementation. Micro-frontends require architectural patterns that maintain both modular development and SEO optimization.
Types of Micro-Frontend Approaches
Single-SPA (Meta Framework)
Acts as a container for multiple micro-frontends.
Manages routing, allows multiple frameworks (React, Angular) to coexist on one page.
Maintains consistent user experience.
Multiple SPAs with Distinct URLs
Each micro-frontend operates independently with its own URL.
Enables component sharing and state management across SPAs.
I-Frames with postMessage API
Micro-frontends embedded in I-frames communicate via browser messaging APIs.
Balances integration with isolation for modular, interactive applications.
Web Components
Uses standardized custom elements and shadow DOM.
Developers create reusable tags and components to extend HTML vocabulary.
Caching-Based Integration (Varnish Cache)
Reverse proxy caches content from micro-frontends for faster responses.
Reduces backend load and improves performance.
Black-Box React Components
Encapsulates functionality within React components, hiding internal logic.
Focuses on modularity and isolated data management.
Shared Event Bus Architecture
Micro-frontends communicate through a shared event bus.
Enables data synchronization without direct coupling.
Literature Survey
The literature review highlights existing research on real-time dashboards and empirical studies, focusing on modern approaches to micro-frontend design and integration for scalable web applications.
Conclusion
Micro-frontend architecture is effective for the scalability, maintainability, without the SEO-optimization the performance of search engine can suffer. Existing research provides an comparison architectural, but not give any structured framework for SEO ranking. Proposed research fill this gap by introducing an SEO based comparative ranking model which helps the developer to take decision about which micro-frontend approach is best or suitable for search engine visibility and ranking. The outcome of this study helps in SEO –optimized distributed frontend system is helpful for design real world application.
