Global supply chains are increasingly exposed to volatility arising from geopolitical tensions, pandemics, climate change, energy transitions, and rapid technological disruption. This review article synthesizes contemporary academic literature to examine how organizations respond strategically to supply chain volatility through resilience-oriented strategies, digital technologies, and sustainability-driven transformations. Drawing on 45 referenced studies from peer reviewed journals, preprints, and conference publications, the paper integrates perspectives on risk management, digitalization (Industry 4.0, AI, blockchain), decision sciences, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) imperatives. The review develops an integrative framework linking volatility drivers, strategic responses, enabling digital tools, and sustainability outcomes. Practical implications for managers and future research directions are also discussed.
Global Supply Chain Management (GSCM) has evolved from a cost-efficiency focus toward prioritizing resilience, adaptability, and sustainability due to rising global uncertainty. Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, energy shocks, and climate disruptions have exposed vulnerabilities in lean and just-in-time systems, demonstrating that volatility is now structural rather than temporary.
This review synthesizes 45 studies (2006–2025) to examine three key dimensions:
Strategic responses to volatility
Digital technologies enabling adaptability
Sustainability as a driver of long-term competitiveness
Trade wars, sanctions, regulatory divergence
Currency fluctuations
Regional political instability
Multinational enterprises must continuously recalibrate strategies due to shifting global policies.
Supplier failures
Logistics bottlenecks
Capacity constraints
Demand fluctuations
Interdependencies across supply chain tiers amplify localized disruptions into systemic crises.
Climate-induced extreme weather
Energy transition pressures
Carbon regulation
Sustainability risks are increasingly intertwined with operational resilience.
Resilience strategies include:
Redundancy (multiple suppliers)
Flexibility in sourcing and production
Diversification
Collaboration and information sharing
Integrated risk management frameworks
The evolution from Lean to Agile to Responsive Supply Chains (RSC) shows a shift toward:
High responsiveness
Balanced cost efficiency
IT-enabled coordination
Customer-driven (pull-based) systems
Responsive supply chains combine speed, flexibility, and cost optimization through digital integration.
Firms increasingly adopt:
Nearshoring
Reshoring
Regionalization
These reduce dependency on distant suppliers but must balance cost and sustainability trade-offs.
Strategic leadership and governance alignment significantly influence adaptive capacity. Firms with strong coordination between corporate strategy and supply chain design demonstrate higher resilience and competitiveness.
Digital transformation is central to managing volatility.
Technologies such as:
Internet of Things (IoT)
Cyber-physical systems
Smart sensors
Cloud platforms
Enable real-time tracking of materials, inventory, and logistics. Improved visibility allows early disruption detection and faster response.
AI supports:
Demand forecasting
Inventory optimization
Disruption prediction
Decision support under uncertainty
However, research highlights the importance of combining AI analytics with managerial judgment.
Blockchain enhances:
Traceability
Transparency
Trust in multi-tier networks
Compliance and sustainability monitoring
It improves accountability, particularly in sustainability-sensitive supply chains.
Sustainability is now a strategic pillar rather than a compliance requirement.
Focus areas:
Carbon emission reduction
Energy efficiency
Waste minimization
Circular economy practices
Digital tools help measure and optimize environmental performance.
Includes:
Labor standards
Worker safety
Community impact
Ethical sourcing
Transparency strengthens stakeholder trust.
Recent research shows that sustainable supply chains are more resilient in the long term. Environmentally and socially responsible systems are better equipped to withstand disruptions.
The review identifies major trends:

The integration of efficiency, resilience, and sustainability defines modern global supply chain competitiveness.
In a volatile global environment, supply chain management has evolved into a strategic capability central to organizational survival and competitiveness. This review synthesizes 45 studies to demonstrate that resilience, digitalization, and sustainability are deeply interconnected. Firms that strategically integrate these dimensions are better positioned to navigate uncertainty and achieve sustainable competitive advantage.
