Introduction
The study examines the impact of digital payment systems on online shopping behaviour among consumers in Ranchi, Jharkhand. With the rapid growth of smartphones, internet access, and government-led digital initiatives, payment methods such as UPI, Google Pay, PhonePe, mobile wallets, debit/credit cards, and internet banking have become increasingly popular. These systems have reduced dependence on cash-on-delivery (COD), making transactions faster, safer, and more convenient while encouraging more frequent online purchases and impulse buying.
The research highlights that digital payments have transformed consumer purchasing behaviour by improving convenience, security, and transaction speed. Despite this growth, limited research has specifically examined how digital payment systems influence online shopping decisions in Ranchi. The study therefore seeks to understand consumer preferences, satisfaction, security concerns, and payment habits in this region.
The literature review shows that previous studies have focused on customer satisfaction, online shopping behaviour, service quality, trust, convenience, perceived risk, and digital payment adoption. Most studies conclude that factors such as security, ease of use, product quality, pricing, delivery services, and customer support significantly influence online shopping satisfaction. However, earlier research has generally examined online shopping and digital payments separately, leaving a gap in understanding their combined effect, particularly in developing regions such as Jharkhand.
To address this gap, the study investigates the relationship between digital payment adoption and online shopping behaviour. It proposes three research questions focusing on the impact of digital payments, the influence of security concerns, and customer satisfaction with digital payment systems. The objectives are to evaluate how digital payments affect purchasing behaviour, examine the role of security in adoption, and assess consumer satisfaction.
The study formulates the following hypotheses:
H?: Digital payment systems have no significant impact on consumers' online shopping behaviour in Ranchi.
H?: Digital payment systems have a significant positive impact on consumers' online shopping behaviour in Ranchi.
The research adopts a descriptive, cross-sectional, survey-based design with explanatory elements. Primary data are collected from 125 respondents in Ranchi using structured questionnaires, while secondary data are used for the literature review. Demographic characteristics, online shopping habits, payment preferences, and Likert-scale responses are analysed to examine the relationship between digital payment adoption (independent variable) and online shopping behaviour (dependent variable). The findings are expected to help businesses, financial institutions, policymakers, and researchers better understand consumer behaviour and improve digital payment services and online shopping experiences in emerging urban markets.
Conclusion
The study concludes that digital payment systems have a positive impact on consumer online shopping behaviour. Factors such as convenience, speed, security multiply payment options, and promotional offers encourage the adoption of digital payments. However, addressing fraud and security concerns is essential to strengthen consumer confidence and support the continued growth of digital payments.
