NGO The emergence of green economy is new area of employment such as green energy, agriculture production and waste management. Development of curriculum consisting of education for sustainable developmentfor inculcating critical thinking, problem solving and ethical decision making are aligned with measurable learning outcomes enabling students to address real world sustainability challenges. It requires coordinated effort among educators, policy makers, industryleaders and researchers to integrate green skills across sectors.
Introduction
Environmental issues such as carbon emissions, pollution, and climate change are among the greatest threats to human survival. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the actions taken in the coming decade will determine the future livability of the planet. Sustainable development, supported by green technologies and green skills, is a key solution to these challenges.
Green technologies promote sustainability through areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and waste management. However, technological solutions alone are not enough; people must also develop the skills needed to support environmental sustainability.
Green skills are the knowledge, abilities, values, and attitudes that enable individuals to contribute to an environmentally sustainable society. They are essential for combating climate change, improving environmental health, and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As demand for green jobs grows, there is an increasing need for workforce training and skill development.
Green skills can be grouped into three categories:
Technical Skills – Specialized knowledge related to sustainable technologies, processes, waste management, environmental regulations, and green production practices.
Transferable Skills – Critical thinking, problem-solving, project management, and an environmentally conscious mindset that supports sustainability initiatives.
Adaptive Skills – Continuous learning, innovation, resilience, and the ability to adapt to evolving green technologies and sustainable practices.
Developing green skills requires education, awareness programs, workshops, and community initiatives led by governments, NGOs, and educational institutions. Youth play a particularly important role in driving sustainable change and leading future green industries such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and waste management.
To strengthen sustainability efforts, education systems should integrate sustainable development concepts into curricula, promoting critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and real-world problem-solving. Collaboration among educators, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers is essential. Additional focus should be placed on emerging sectors such as healthcare and tourism, digital skill integration, regular policy evaluation, and stronger connections between research and practical implementation.
