The study emphasizes the critical role of secondary education (ages 14–18, grades 9–12) in shaping students' personal and social development, equipping them with useful knowledge, skills, and values. According to Krishnagopal Sayyadan (1967), secondary education helps align students’ individual and societal life goals, enabling overall personality development and successful life preparation.
Modern Relevance of Education:
With the advent of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, education has become even more vital. The policy stresses:
Skill development
Character building
Cultural preservation
Social harmony
Scientific outlook
Responsible citizenship
Education is now viewed as fundamental to nation-building, democratic progress, and human development, helping learners distinguish right from wrong, adapt to their environment, and contribute positively to society.
Research Focus:
Title: "A Study on the Impact of NEP 2020 on Social Science Teaching in Secondary Education in Uttar Pradesh"
The study examines how NEP 2020 has influenced social science teaching in Uttar Pradesh's state (UP Board) and central (CBSE) secondary education systems, specifically for grades 9 and 10.
Social Science Education is considered essential for instilling democratic values, critical thinking, cultural appreciation, and civic responsibilities.
The formal education system in India connects primary, secondary, and higher education; secondary education is thus a vital intermediate phase.
Research Methodology:
Method: Descriptive Survey
Location: Five districts in Uttar Pradesh – Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, Lakhimpur, Sonbhadra, and Lucknow
Population: Grade 9 and 10 students from rural and urban areas, across both CBSE and UP Board schools
Sampling Technique: Random sampling
Findings:
The analysis showed a significant difference in social science learning outcomes:
CBSE students performed better than UP Board students.
Possible reasons include:
Better socio-economic conditions
Supportive family environments
Greater availability of learning opportunities
Suggestions for Future Research:
Extend the study to other districts or states.
Explore the impact on technical/vocational education (e.g., ITI).
Study other subjects beyond social science.
Investigate factors like students' interests, habits, aspirations, and socio-economic background.
Conduct comparative studies between general and differently-abled students.
Examine the influence of family environment, career aspirations, and academic behaviors on learning outcomes.
