Noise Pollution is a environmental concern , impacting on health . To mitigate this issue in the crowded locality . Noise absorbing panel wall developed using agro waste material such as maize waste , coconut fibre, rice straw waste with adhesive material for binding and moulded into 1x1ft panel with 1 cm thickness and dried under the sun . The panel was installed and tested using a sound meter app. Result show an average reduction of 10dB in noise level. The result showed that panel has good sound absorption properties, where light weight, non toxic and biodegradable. This agro waste panel can be effectively used to create low cost.
Introduction
Noise pollution in cities is a growing environmental and health problem. Traditional soundproofing materials like fiberglass and synthetic foam are costly and environmentally harmful. This study focuses on developing an affordable, eco-friendly sound-absorbing panel made from agricultural waste—specifically maize waste, rice straw, and coconut fiber—which are lightweight, porous, and have good sound and thermal insulation properties.
Objectives:
Use agro-waste to create sound absorption panels.
Cast the panels and test their noise absorption capacity compared to brick structures.
Scope:
These panels offer cost-effective noise control, especially beneficial for low-income families and various industries.
Materials:
Agro waste: Maize waste, rice straw (provides thermal insulation and durability), and coconut fiber (lightweight with high tensile strength).
Adhesives: Natural latex and wheat flour paste used as binders, both eco-friendly and enhancing sound absorption.
Manufacturing Process:
The agro waste materials are dried, cut, and mixed with a natural adhesive (made from wheat flour, natural latex, lime powder, sugar, vinegar, and water). The mixture is poured into plywood molds, compacted, dried for about 2-3 days, and finished with oil paint for durability and aesthetics.
Challenges:
Surface coatings like cement paste and gypsum powder caused peeling and cracking, while oil paint proved effective without damaging the panel.
Economic Analysis:
Agro waste panels are significantly more affordable than traditional foam panels, making them an attractive alternative.
Results:
Sound tests showed a noise reduction of approximately 10.7 dB after installing the agro waste panel, demonstrating effective noise absorption.
Conclusion
We conducted a sound test on our noise absorbing panel. For the test placing panel inside a brick structure and measuring sound levels with and without the panel installed. The initial sound level without the panel was recorded at 93.2db while the reading with panel installed was 82.5db.the level of noise decreased by 10.7dB when the panel was installed to the brick structure. These results prove that the agro waste noise absorbing panel can absorb more capacity of noise. This result prove that our agro waste noise absorbing panel is effective can be used as sustainable to reducing noise levels.
