The rapid growth of digital technology and urban sharing economy has increased the demand for efficient rental management systems. Traditional rental methods involve manual communication, lack transparency, consume more time, and create difficulties in finding suitable rental products. To overcome these limitations, U-RENT is proposed as a universal rental application that connects renters and owners through a single digital platform. The application supports multiple rental categories including cars, bikes, houses, parking slots, home appliances, gadgets, workers, drivers, and commercial properties.
The proposed system is developed using Android Studio for frontend development and Firebase for backend services including authentication, real-time database, and cloud storage. U-RENT provides secure user authentication, product listing, real-time availability status, search and filtering options, direct communication through call and WhatsApp integration, and user-friendly interfaces. The system improves transparency, re-duces rental search time, and enhances communication between users and owners.
Introduction
The text presents U-Rent, a mobile-based rental platform designed to make renting and sharing products easier, faster, and more transparent. It addresses problems with traditional rental systems, which often involve manual processes, limited communication, inefficient product discovery, and a lack of transparency.
Purpose of U-Rent
U-Rent provides a digital platform where users can:
Create and manage profiles.
List products for rent.
Browse and search rental products.
Filter products by category, location, price, and availability.
Book rental items.
Communicate with owners through phone calls and WhatsApp.
Receive booking and availability notifications.
Give ratings and reviews.
Make secure payments.
The platform can support multiple categories, including vehicles, electronics, furniture, houses, parking spaces, home appliances, gadgets, and other products.
Technology used
The application is developed using:
Android Studio and Java for the mobile frontend.
Firebase Authentication for secure user registration and login. combination of real-time availability, search and filtering, direct communication, secure authentication, booking
Firebase Realtime Database and Firestore for storing and synchronizing user, product, booking, and availability data.
Firebase Cloud Storage for product images and documents.
Cloud-based services for scalability and real-time updates.
The system uses a modular, three-layer architecture consisting of the user interface, application logic, and backend/data-management layers.
Main modules
The application consists of several important modules:
User Authentication Module – Provides secure registration and login, including OTP-based authentication.
Product Management Module – Allows owners to add, edit, update, and delete rental listings.
Search and Filter Module – Helps users find products based on category, location, price, and availability.
Real-Time Availability Module – Keeps product availability information synchronized.
Communication Module – Enables direct communication between renters and owners.
Admin Management Module – Supports administrative control and management of the platform.
Methodology
The project follows an agile development methodology, allowing the system to be developed and improved through iterative stages.
The major stages were:
Requirement analysis
System and database design
UI and application development
Firebase integration
Module implementation
Functional and integration testing
Usability testing with students and trial users
Performance and security evaluation
The system emphasizes user-centered design, security, scalability, real-time synchronization, and ease of use.
Results
The study reports that U-Rent successfully addresses several limitations of traditional rental systems. The application improves:
Product accessibility through search and filtering.
Communication through direct calls and WhatsApp.
Transaction efficiency through booking and payment functionality.
Transparency and trust through ratings and reviews.
Availability accuracy through real-time Firebase synchronization.
User engagement through notifications and an easy-to-use interface.
User feedback indicated that students experienced lower rental costs compared with traditional rental approaches. The system also promotes resource sharing, potentially reducing unnecessary ownership and resource consumption.
Challenges and limitations
The study identifies several remaining challenges, including:
Dependence on internet connectivity.
Building sufficient trust between renters and owners.
Handling disputes and refunds.
Efficient management of location-based listings.
Maintaining security for personal and payment information.
Future versions could address these issues through offline-support features, improved dispute-resolution mechanisms, enhanced location services, AI-based recommendations, and additional security features.
Conclusion
U-Rent demonstrates an effective solution for modern digital rental services, addressing challenges in manual rental processes. The application provides a comprehensive plat-form for listing, booking, and communicating regarding rental items. Real-time chat, call options, and booking confirmation improve user interaction and satisfaction. The use of Firebase ensures secure, scalable, and efficient backend operations. Location-based services and search filters enhance the ease of product discovery. Ratings and review mechanisms increase transparency and trust between users. The platform’s modular architecture allows easy addition of features and categories. Agile methodology ensured iterative improvement, functional efficiency, and user-centered design. User testing and analytics indicate improved engagement, reduced transaction time, and higher reliability. U-Rent contributes to resource optimization by promoting shared usage of products. Limitations such as internet dependency are manageable with offline support features in future iterations. The study confirms that digital rental systems significantly enhance urban and campus-based sharing economies. U-Rent’s approach can be scaled for broader applications, offering secure, transparent, and efficient rental services. This project lays a foundation for future developments in smart rental applications. Enabled direct communication between renters and owners. Developed a user-friendly Android application interface. Improved product accessibility through search and filter features.
