Airport infrastructure plays a crucial role in supporting international trade, logistics connectivity, and economic development. Efficient cargo handling systems, modern warehousing facilities, and technological advancements contribute significantly to improving airport operations. This study focuses on a comparative analysis of the infrastructure facilities of Coimbatore International Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The study is based entirely on secondary data collected from airport authority reports, research articles, government publications, and aviation industry reports. The analysis compares export and import infrastructure, cargo handling systems, warehousing facilities, customs procedures, technological support, and logistics services available at both airports. The findings reveal that Kuala Lumpur International Airport has highly developed infrastructure, advanced technology, and automated cargo handling systems, whereas Coimbatore International Airport has relatively limited cargo infrastructure and semi-mechanized operations. The study concludes that improving infrastructure capacity, adopting digital technologies, and enhancing logistics support services are essential for regional airports like Coimbatore to improve their efficiency and competitiveness in international trade.
Introduction
Airport infrastructure is essential for supporting global aviation, trade, passenger movement, and economic development. This study compares Coimbatore International Airport (India) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Malaysia) to analyze differences in infrastructure, technology, cargo handling, and logistics efficiency.
Coimbatore International Airport plays an important role in supporting exports from nearby industrial cities such as Tiruppur and Erode, especially textiles, engineering products, and agricultural goods. However, its infrastructure is still developing compared to major international hubs. In contrast, Kuala Lumpur International Airport is a leading aviation hub in Southeast Asia with advanced cargo terminals, automated systems, digital customs clearance, large warehousing facilities, and strong logistics support.
The literature review highlights that airport infrastructure significantly influences efficiency, competitiveness, tourism development, passenger satisfaction, and operational performance. Studies also show that smart technologies such as automation, biometric systems, and digital tracking improve airport operations. However, limited research compares regional airports in India with major international hubs, which this study aims to address.
The objectives include comparing export-import infrastructure, cargo handling systems, warehousing facilities, technological support, logistics efficiency, and turnaround time at both airports.
The methodology uses a comparative and descriptive research design based on secondary data collected from airport reports, government publications, research journals, and online sources. Data was analyzed by categorizing infrastructure and logistics features and comparing both airports.
The results show that Kuala Lumpur International Airport has advanced, fully automated cargo systems, large bonded warehouses, temperature-controlled storage, digital customs processes, and real-time tracking technologies. Coimbatore International Airport has limited cargo capacity, semi-mechanized operations, smaller warehousing facilities, and more manual customs procedures.
The discussion concludes that technological advancement and infrastructure development greatly improve airport efficiency. While Coimbatore Airport supports regional industries, improvements in cargo terminals, cold storage, digital systems, and automation could enhance its performance and competitiveness.
Conclusion
The comparative study of airport infrastructure between Coimbatore International Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport highlights significant differences in cargo infrastructure, technology adoption, and operational efficiency.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport operates as a major international cargo hub with advanced infrastructure and automated logistics systems. On the other hand, Coimbatore International Airport functions mainly as a regional airport supporting limited international cargo operations.
The study concludes that continuous investment in infrastructure development, technological modernization, and logistics support services is necessary for regional airports like Coimbatore to enhance their role in international trade and improve overall operational performance.
